It’s always great having the opportunity to do some work for a good cause – and they don’t come much better than Grace Secondary School. Grace is a school that has been built in the Sudan, a hugely underprivileged area of the world where education is sorely lacking. Richard and Claire Budd started the 100% non-profit charity a few years back and have managed to raise a whopping £116K!
Every year they organise a fundraiser in the form of a Christmas charity ball – and this year we turned out to shoot it for them. The event actually fell on the same weekend as Suzy and Ryan’s wedding (see previous entry) so we were blessed/cursed with 8 inches of snow at this rural event. Despite many trials on the day which included the venue cancelling, the DJ cancelling and the band being informed that the event was off – Richard and Claire managed to pull it all together and a great night was had by all.

Big thanks to those involved:
- Richard and Claire Budd for everything
- Nina Garcia for the entertainment
- ‘Just Friends’ for the wonderful jazz
- Paul Hyland for the magic!
- Richard Budd and Myself for the last minute table decorations!
An absolutely stunning wedding – attributed in no small part to the 8 inches of snow that covered the rural village outside Dorchester. Fortunately we journeyed up the night before – because the 1 1/2 hour journey to a staggering 5 hours!! A fantastically photogenic couple and an all round Christmassy mood made this a really lovely day, and a lot of fun to shoot.
Best lesson learned: Salopettes may not be smart, but if you have to lie/kneel on the ground in 8 inches of snow to get the right angle they sure are the best thing you can wear. Contrast with the photographer in his suit – not so nice.
Having the ability to split easily into two mobile units is an important development. An oft overlooked aspect of the wedding day is the 'getting ready' - and being able to send Eve off to shoot the bride and the maids putting the war paint on while I shoot the (inevitably) nervous groom adds a great contrast and set-up to the cut.
